Brabant 1624(a) escalin
This specimen was lot 1025 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €60 (about US$84 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR escalin, 1624, Bruxelles. D/ Lion deb. à g., ten. une épée et un écu ovale d'Autriche-Bourgogne. R/ Écu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Belle patine. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver escalin of 1624, Brussels mint. Obverse: lion rampant left, bearing a sword and the oval arms of Austria-Burgundy; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. Nice patina, Very Fine.)"
This type was struck 1621-57 at Antwerp (hand mintmark), Brussels (angel face mintmark, shown here) and Maastricht (star mintmark, until 1632). Other escalins or schellings were struck at Artois, Tournai, Franche Comté, Luxembourg and Flanders.
