Jean Elsen sale 164, lot 884

This specimen was lot 884 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €80 (about US$111 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), AR demi-florin (10 sols), 1601, Bruxelles. D/ B. affrontés des archiducs sous une couronne. R/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne. En dessous, X. Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, silver half florin or ten sols of 1601, Brussels mint. Obverse: bust of the archdukes facing each other under a crown; reverse: Burgundian cross under a crown, an X below. Fine.)"

This series of 1599-1603 was struck in denominations of two, one, half (= real), quarter and eighth florin (= stoter). It was not a success and was replaced in 1612 by the ducaton, patagon and their fractions. The half half florin was struck at Bruges, Tournai, Brussels (shown here), Antwerp and Maastricht 1601-03 and undated.
