Bolivia 1839-PTS LM 8 soles
This specimen was lot 72307 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 8 Soles, 1839-PTS LM. Potosi Mint. NGC EF-40. Deep charcoal toning with portrait of Simon Bolivar. Great design of two llamas kneeling before a tree, reverse." This type was struck in large quantities 1827-40 after Bolivian independence. It was struck in Potosi right thru the disruption of the temporary merger with Peru 1836-39. This coin usually comes poorly struck on bad planchets. Later eight soles were struck to the same weight standard until 1859, when the weight was lowered to 20 grams. Assayer LM stamped coins 1833-39, assayer LR 1839-43.
