Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 55553
SB124-55553 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 55553 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 8 Scudos, 1839/8-PTS LM. Potosi Mint. PCGS Genuine--Scratch, AU Details." While silver coins from Bolivia exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. For the colonial period, Colombia may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by Peru. Bolivia, Chile and Guatemala are minor sources. This type was minted 1831-40 and is scarce, especially in nice condition. While the production of eight soles was divided between assayers LM and LR in 1839, only LM is known to have stamped gold. This overdate is not mentioned in the SCWC.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27 g, 0.875 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-21; KM-99.
