SB1122-71305r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71305 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 4 Reales, 1822-PTS PJ. Potosi Mint. Ferdinand VII. PCGS EF-40. Displaying a well-centered strike and elegantly toned surfaces with hints of iridescent color, this 4 Reales piece is a handsome offering. While the centers are just a touch weakly struck, the details are well preserved. An appealing piece with great originality. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This is an example of a type struck 1816-25 at Potosi, Bolivia, in the name of Ferdinand VII. Assayer PJ is recorded for 1803-24. This is listed as a common type, cheaper than Ferdinand VII four reales from Peru or Mexico, but it is seldom seen.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.896 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-15760, KM-88; Cal-1105.
