SB224-73706r.jpg

This specimen was lot 3701 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it sold for $101.15. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA: Carlos IV, 1788-1808, AR 4 reales, 1806-PTS, assayer PJ, Fine to VF." The second specimen was lot 73706 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[3] noted, "BOLIVIA. 4 Reales, 1806-PTS PJ. Potosi Mint. Charles IV. NGC EF-40. Moderately worn but retaining significant detail, with remnants of original luster remaining in the peripheries." It was subsequently lot 45392 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $145. This is a late example of a type struck 1791-1808 at Potosi, Bolivia (then called Upper Peru). It was replaced in 1816 by the bust of Ferdinand VII. Harris[2] notes that Potosi four reales of Charles IV are the commonest mint, ahead of Mexico City. Recent hoard finds have only increased this number. Assayer PJ is recorded for 1803-24.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.53 g, 0.896 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-13807, KM-72.
