This specimen was lot 71296 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 4 Reales, 1804-PTS PJ. Potosi Mint. Charles IV. PCGS AU-53. This wholesome piece offers abundant well-struck detail. The moderate toning displays subtle hues of crimson and burnt orange that shine vividly under the light. A charming and problem-free piece. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This is an example of a type struck 1791-1808 at Potosi, Bolivia, in the name of Charles IV. Assayer PJ is recorded for 1803-24. Harris[2] notes that Potosi four reales of Charles IV are the commonest mint, ahead of Mexico City. Recent hoard finds have only increased this number.
