Sedwick Treasure Auction 35, lot 1112
Sed35-1112r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1112 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 35 (Winter Park, FL, May 2024), where it sold for $420. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Potosí, bust 1/2 real, Charles IV, 1795 PP, NGC MS 63, finest known in NGC census. Strongly lustrous fields sprinkled with light toning, the rims full and the details sharp, very rare grade for this type (or for any bust 1/2 real)." This is an example of a type struck 1791-1808 at Potosi, Bolivia (then called Upper Peru). It replaced the half real of Charles III but is scarcer. Assayer PR is recorded for 1776-95 and assayer PP (shown here) 1795-1802. The early dates featured a curious "local bust." The fineness was reduced from 0.903 to 0.896 in 1786.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.896 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-13261; Janson-79.7.2; KM-69; Cal-305.
