This specimen was lot 3888 in Goldberg sale 84 (Los Angeles, January 2015), where it sold for $165. The catalog description[1] noted, "Bolivia. 4 Reales, 1793-PR. Charles IV. NGC graded VF-20 (Cuzco Hoard)." This is an example of a type struck 1791-1808 at Potosi, Bolivia (then called Upper Peru). It was replaced in 1816 by the bust of Ferdinand VII. Harris[2] notes that Potosi four reales of Charles IV are the commonest mint, ahead of Mexico City by about two to one. Recent hoard finds have only increased this number. The assayer PR appears for 1776-95.
