Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71188
SB1122-71188r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71188 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, 1715-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Diego de Ybarbouru (Y). Philip V. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, VF Details. A rather heavy 4 Reales piece with abundant detail, including two readable dates. The surfaces are moderately toned with a few spots of encrustation around the peripheries. There are a handful of visible tooling scratches that account for the grade, most prominently on the central obverse devices. However, the coin shows enough originality and appealing details to remain an enticing example of the date. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Privately purchased from Louis Hudson." This type was struck for Philip V through his entire reign--unlike in Europe, his rule was never challenged in America. Assayer Y stamped coins 1701-28.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 14.15 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-8986, KM-30; Cal-1167.
