Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71180
SB1122-71180r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71180 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, 1705-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Diego de Ybarbouru (Y). Philip V. PCGS EF-40. Despite some flat areas and an irregular planchet, this deeply toned Cob displays two dates, a denomination, a mintmark, and an assayer's initial. The reverse shows its cross and the lower castle and lion quite handsomely. Some minor verdigris on the upper right of the obverse is noted for completeness. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Privately purchased from Freeman Craig." This type was struck for Philip V through his entire reign--unlike in Europe, his rule was never challenged in America. Assayer Y stamped coins 1701-28.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 13.88 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-8948, KM-30; Cal-1157.
