Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 53790

This specimen was lot 53790 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 8 Reales, 1694-P VR. Potosi Mint. Charles II. NGC VF-20." This type was struck 1667-1700 in large quantities for Charles II. It superseded the shield/cross type which was discredited in the debasement scandal of the 1630's and 1640's. Assayer VR operated 1684-97.
