from the Stack's Bowers sale of the Kirk Menczer Collection, lot 73494
SB1025-73494r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73494 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 1/2 Real, 1692. Potosi Mint. Charles II. PCGS VF-25. From the Richard August Collection." This type was struck in the name of the degenerate Charles II 1667-1700. Assayer de Villar stamped coins with a "V" 1679-84 and a "VR" 1684-97 but we have never seen an assayer's initial on a half real of this reign. The weight of half reales varied more (i.e., more underweight) than the larger denominations.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 1.00 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-7159, KM-22; Cal-181.
