Bolivia 1672-P E 4 reales
This specimen was lot 708 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 4 reales, 1672 E, ex-Ponte. Full pillars with clear date and two assayers, nearly full cross with third assayer to right, all well-centered on a peripherally flat flan with parts of edge crude (as made), Fine with patchy toning. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection." In 1652, the four and eight reales were redesigned to distinguish the reformed (full silver) product from the old, debased cobs. Assayer "E" (Antonio de Ergueta) was brought in to clean house and served 1650-79, well into the reign of Charles II, as here.
