Áureo y Calicó sale 345, lot 471

This specimen was lot 471 in Áureo y Calicó sale 345 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €2,100 (about US$2,771 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1671. Carlos II. Potosí. E. 8 reales. Redonda. Tipo "Real". Perforación. Rara. MBC. (kingdom of Spain, Charles II, eight reales of 1671, Potosí mint, round "royal" tyoe. Holed, rare, very fine.)"

This type was struck 1667-1701 for Charles II. It superseded the shield/cross type which was discredited in the debasement scandal of the 1630's and 1640's. Royals, struck for presentation, are all rare and nearly always come holed. Assayer E operated 1651-78. We don't know why this presentation piece is 3 g underweight. The hole is not large enough to remove 10% of the coin's weight.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.47 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 24,84 g.

Catalog reference: KM R26 (round), KM 26 (cob), Cal-307, Lázaro 185, Cayón-7549.
