Sedwick Treasure Auction 36, lot 614
Sed50-0614r.jpg

This specimen was lot 614 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 4 reales, 1631 T, rare, ex-Ponte. Bold full 16 and 31 of date (separated by doubling) outside of full but centrally weak cross, good full shield with bold full •P-T• to left and O-iiii to right, attractively toned AVF. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection." This type was struck 1622-47, throughout the first part of the reign of Philip IV. Dates were added in 1617; even so, many are so crudely made that the dates are not legible. This type is rare; it was never made in large quantities and nearly all melted down in the great remintage of 1649-52 when the debased cobs were called in. Assayer T operated 1626-36 and 1643-48 and was probably deeply implicated in the debasement fraud.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.53 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 13.58 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón-6040; S-P26; KM-17a; Cal-1095.
