Bolivia (1577-85)-P C 2 reales
This specimen was lot 624 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 2 reales, Philip II, assayer C without erasure, extremely rare, ex-Ponte. Broad, round, evenly struck example with all inner details full but peripheries slightly crude, the full and clear P-C with no space or erasure in between mated with early cross showing 'flat' lions, Fine with contrasting toning, plugged hole and light tooling. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection." The mountains around Potosí contained enormous amounts of high grade silver ore, a situation the Spanish were not slow to exploit. A mint was set up in the 1570's to process the silver mined there. The early products of the reign of Philip II are fairly good quality but rot set in during the following reign, including fraudulent debasement. This undated type, among the first products of the mint at Potosí, comes in many varieties and assayers (A, A/B, B, B/R, C, L and M). Dating began in 1617.
