Bohemia 1695-CK thaler Dav-3284
This specimen was lot 4256 in Sincona sale 34 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 525 CHF (about US$623 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA. Leopold I. 1657-1705 Taler 1695. Kuttenberg Münzmeister Christof Kroh. Fast sehr schön-sehr schön. Vermutlich zeitgenössische Fälschung. (Holy Roman Empire, Leopold I, 1657-1705, thaler of 1695, Kuttenberg mint, mintmaster Christof Kroh. About very fine-very fine. Likely a contemporary counterfeit.)"
The weight of this piece suggests that it is a fake altho the photo is very convincing. The genuine type, the first Kuttenberg issue since 1671, is rare. The price realized suggests that bidders were not deterred.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 23.20 g.
