Sincona sale 34, lot 4255

This specimen was lot 4255 in Sincona sale 34 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 28,000 CHF (about US$33,238 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA. Leopold I. 1657-1705 Taler 1671. Kuttenberg Münzmeister Gregor Hackl. Von grosser Seltenheit. Gutes sehr schön. Schöne Patina. Winz. Schrötlf. am Rand. (Holy Roman Empire, Leopold I, 1657-1705, thaler of 1671, Kuttenberg mint, mintmaster Gregor Hackl. Of the highest rarity, Good very fine, beautiful patina, a few small rim nicks.)"

The SCWC, which combines Dav-3282 and Dav-3283 into KM 497, lists this rare type for 1659, 1666-71. The Kuttenberg mines and mint were ruined by the Thirty Years War and output thereafter was very low.
