Jean Elsen sale 149, lot 1354

This specimen was lot 1354 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €8,000 (about US$10,835 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SAINT EMPIRE, Rodolphe II (1576-1612), AR Taler, 1604, Kuttenberg. Pour la Bohême. D/ B. dr. et cuir. à d., une fraise au col. En dessous, petit lion à d. R/ Aigle impériale couronnée, portant sur la poitrine l'écu d'Autriche-Bourgogne entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Rare dans cette qualité. Superbe. (Holy Roman Empire, Rudolf II, 1576-1612, silver thaler of 1604, Kuttenberg mint, struck for Bohemia. Obverse: draped and armored bust right in ruffed collar, small lion below; reverse: crowned imperial eagle supports the arms of Austria-Burgundy with the Order of the Golden Fleece around. Rare in this quality, Extremely Fine.)"

The SCWC lists this type for 1602-12 under Bohemia. Kuttenberg, now Kutná Hora, was indeed in Bohemia, but was run by the Hapsburgs as an ordinary branch mint. The town was devastated during the Thirty Years War and the mines fell into ruin.
