Bohemia 1597 thaler Dav-8079
This specimen was lot 6032 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $517. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Taler, 1597. Kuttenberg Mint. Rudolf II (1576-1612). NGC AU-50. A few areas of flat strike at the highest points of relief and no major actual wear. Deep old cabinet toning pervades the entire surface area." This particular type is a product of the Kuttenberg mint for 1578-1602; the issues of 1601-02 are catalogued as Dav-3023. Davenport lists over 130 different thalers for Austria in the sixteenth century. The Kuttenberg or Kutná Hora mint in Bohemia was an important producer of coin until it was wrecked during the Thirty Years War.
