Bohemia 1596 thaler Dav-8079
This specimen was lot 71548 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Taler, 1596. Kuttenberg Mint. Rudolf II. PCGS AU-58. Displaying just a hint of light handling, this entrancing Bohemian crown dazzles with subtle pastel tone and some enchanting brilliance remaining in the protected areas." This particular type is a product of the Kuttenberg mint in Bohemia for 1578-1602; the issues of 1601-02 are catalogued as Dav-3023. The auction records show examples for nearly all the dates with none predominating. The Kuttenberg or Kutná Hora mint in Bohemia was an important producer of coin until it was wrecked during the Thirty Years War.
