Bern 1766 1/2 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 4153 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 2,200 CHF (about US$3,049 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Bern, Stadt und Kanton, Vierer 1766, Bern. Goldabschlag. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion SINCONA 30, Zürich, Mai 2016, Los 3657. (Switzerland, canton of Bern, vierer of 1766, Bern mint. Very rare, Very Fine.)"
This type was struck in billon 1762-66, 1769-71, 1774-81, 1785-97 and in gold 1766 only. A similar batzen (4 kreuzer, KM 87) was also struck in gold. In Germany, the convention thaler was 120 kreuzer; in Switzerland, the thaler was 160 kreuzer, making this coin 1/320 thaler.
