Bern (1670) thaler Dav-4615
This specimen was lot 4100 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 28,000 CHF (about US$40,614 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Bern, Stadt und Kanton, Taler o. J. (um 1670), Bern. MONETA NOVA REIPVB BERN. Berner Wappen auf verzierter Kartusche. Rv. SI DEUS PRO NOBIS QUIS CONTRA NOS. Ankerkreuz mit lilienförmigen Verzierungen in den Kreuzwinkeln. Äusserst selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Leichter Doppelschlag auf der Vorderseite. Exemplar der Auktion SINCONA 30, Zürich, Mai 2016, Los 3574. Exemplar der Sammlung Wüthrich, Auktion Spink & Son 14, Zürich, November 1984, Los 180. Interessant ist die Tatsache, dass auf der Vorderseite der Buchstabe "U", wie in der damaligen Zeit üblich, als "V" geschrieben wurde, hingegen auf der Rückseite als "U". Nicht weniger interessant ist der Spruch auf der Rückseite "SI DEUS PRO NOBIS QUIS CONTRA NOS", welcher sonst nie auf Berner Münzen anzutreffen ist, sondern nur auf Churer Münzen. (Switzerland, city and canton of Bern, undated thaler, circa 1670, Bern mint. Obverse: city arms in an ornate cartouche; reverse: anchor cross cantonned with four fleur-de-lys arabesques. Extremely rare, Very Fine-Extremely Fine, Slightly double struck on the obverse. Interestingly, the letter "U" on the obverse is written as a "V," as was customary at the time, but on the reverse as a "U." No less interesting is the inscription on the reverse, "SI DEUS PRO NOBIS QUIS CONTRA NOS," which is otherwise never found on Bernese coins, but only on Chur coins.)"
The legend "SI DEUS PRO NOBIS QUIS CONTRA NOS" translates as, "If God is with us, who can be against us?", which motto was made notorious by Oliver Cromwell, who used it to justify his devastation of Ireland. Numista attributes this undated thaler to 1646-52, but we will follow Sincona here.
