Bentheim-Tecklenburg-Rheda 1674 4-1/2 pfennig
This specimen was lot 1025 in Sincona sale 22 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 350 CHF (about US$440 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Bentheim-Tecklenburg-Rheda, Grafschaft, Moritz, 1623-1674 4 1/2 Pfennig 1674. Sehr selten. Schön-sehr schön. (Germany, county of Bentheim-Tecklenburg-Rheda, Maurice (1623-74), 4½ pfennig of 1674, very scarce, fine to very fine.)"
This 4½ pfennig or 1/56 thaler is from the county of Bentheim, on the border between the bishopric of Münster and the Netherlands. Thalers exist for this locale but are very rare, so collectors must content themselves with minors. Other minors include one, 1½, two, three, four, five, six and eight pfennig as well as various mariengroschen. This is the only issue of this denomination. The dynasty originally ruled all three counties but Tecklenburg was lost in 1696. The county was mediatized in 1806.
Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
Specification: copper, this specimen 0.99 g.
