Bentheim-Tecklenburg-Rheda 1677 24 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 780 in Jean Elsen list 269 (Brussels, July-August 2014), where it was offered for €475 (about US$646). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, BENTHEIM-TECKLENBURG-RHEDA, Johann Adolf (1674-1700), AR 24 Mariengroschen, 1677, Droit: Heaume cimé d'un paon. Revers: Valeur dans le champ. Patine foncée. Très Beau à Superbe (Germany, county of Bentheim-Tecklenburg-Rheda, John Adolf (1674-1700), silver twenty-four mariengroschen of 1677. Obverse: helmet with peacock crest; reverse: value in field. Nice color, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This 24 mariengroschen or two-thirds thaler is from the county of Bentheim, on the border between the bishopric of Munster and the Netherlands. Thalers exist for this locale but are very rare, so collectors must content themselves with this issue. The dynasty originally ruled all three counties but Tecklenburg was lost in 1696. The county was mediatized in 1806.
Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
Specification: silver, this specimen 16,60 g.
