Steve Album sale 51, lot 729
Bengal in 1942, from Hammond's atlas

This specimen was lot 729 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "BENGAL PRESIDENCY: AE pice, [Farrukhabad], year 45, in the name of Shah Alam II // value in Hindi, Persian, & Bengali; strike error, about 10% off-center and an extremely rare type in any grade, VF, RRR." This type was struck with a frozen date. While the Mughal Empire lasted, the British in Bengal were careful to strike coinage in the emperor's name. The inscriptions are in Arabic on the obverse and Bengali and Hindi on the reverse. The date should read "۴۵".

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.48 g, copper, 24.5 mm diameter, this specimen 6.46 g.

Catalog reference: Stv-8.120, Prid-335A. KM-64.
