Belize 1979 5 cents rev DSLR.jpg

This specimen is one of a type struck for Belize 1976-80, 1986-94 and 2000, likely at London or Ottawa. The denomination was originally nickel brass (KM 34). Simultaneous with this circulation issue, the Franklin Mint was striking proofs of an entirely different design featuring the fork-tailed flycatcher. These were packaged in sets with the other denominations and mass-marketed to collectors in the United States, making them more familiar than the regular issue, which is rather drab.

Recorded mintage: 1,040,000.

Specification: 1.04 g, aluminum, 20.2 mm diameter, plain edge.

Catalog reference: KM 34a.
