Jean Elsen sale 146, lot 1302

This specimen was lot 1302 in Jean Elsen sale 146 (Brussels, November 2020), where it sold for €380 (about US$554 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIQUE, Royaume, Léopold II (1865-1909), AR 2 francs, 1867. Type A. Avec croix sur la couronne. presque Fleur de Coin. (kingdom of Belgium, Leopold II, 1865-1909, silver two francs of 1867, type A with a cross on the crown. about Uncirculated.)"

The variety without the cross on the cross (KM 30.2) is listed as more common. Leopold II was hailed at the beginning of his reign as an enlightened, constitutional monarch, and later vilified for his activities in the Congo Free State.
