Jean Elsen list 269, lot 720
Belgium JElsen 269-720r.jpg

This specimen was lot 720 in Jean Elsen list 269 (Brussels, July-August 2014), where it was offered for €9,000 (about US$12,244). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIQUE, Royaume, Léopold II (1865-1909), AV 10 francs, 1867, Or rouge. Tranche cannelée. Très Rare. Superbe à Fleur de Coin (kingdom of Belgium, Leopold II (1865-1909), gold ten francs of 1867, reeded edge. Very rare, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This rare type was struck 1867 only. A few struck for Leopold I in 1849-50 complete the series. We don't know why the weight is listed at 3.16 g instead of the 3.22 g noted for the French ten francs.

Recorded mintage: unknown but few.

Specification: 3.166 g, 0.900 fine gold, .091 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM A33, Dupriez, 1054; Fr-415.
