Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 807

This specimen was lot 807 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €10,000 (about US$13,253 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIQUE, Royaume, Léopold Ier (1831-1865), Cu 5 centimes, 1860. Extrêmement rare. presque Fleur de Coin. (kingdom of Belgium, Leopold I, 1831-65, copper five centimes of 1860. Extremely rare, about Uncirculated.)"

This type was struck 1833-61. In 1861, the type was replaced with a copper-nickel five centimes of smaller diameter.

Recorded mintage: 199,000 for 1860-61; a rare date.

Specification: 9.8 g, copper.
