Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 842, with dot

The first specimen was lot 888 in Jean Elsen sale 138 (Brussels, September 2018), where it sold for €100 (about US$139 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIQUE, Royaume, Léopold Ier (1831-1865), Cupro-nickel 20 centimes, 1860. LEOPOLD I sans point. Petites taches. Superbe. (kingdom of Belgium, Leopold I, 1831-65, copper-nickel twenty centimes of 1860, king's name without dot. Minor stains, extremely fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 842 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,590 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"BELGIQUE, Royaume, Léopold Ier (1831-1865), Cupro-nickel 20 centimes, 1860. LEOPOLD I. avec point. Dupriez 752 var.; Bogaert 752B1. Très rare Petites taches. Superbe à Fleur de Coin. (kingdom of Belgium, Leopold I, 1831-65, copper-nickel twenty centimes of 1860, LEOPOLD I with dot. Very rare, minor nicks, Extremely Fine - Uncirculated.)"

This issue of 1860-61 superseded the silver twenty centimes of 1852-58 but was abandoned after two years. The 1860 is much scarcer than the 1861. No more were struck during the nineteenth century.

Recorded mintage: 1,804,000 for 1860-61.
