Belgium 1842 2 centimes
This specimen was lot 1128 in Jean Elsen sale 136 (Brussels, March 2018), where it sold for €220 (about US$323 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BELGIQUE, Royaume, Léopold Ier (1831-1865), Cu 2 centimes, 1842. Superbe. (kingdom of Belgium, Leopold I, 1831-65, copper two centimes of 1842. Extremely fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 1261 in Jean Elsen sale 156 (Brussels, September 2023), where it sold for €160 (about US$205 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"BELGIQUE, Royaume, Léopold Ier (1831-1865), Cu 2 centimes, 1842. Petites taches. Fleur de Coin. (kingdom of Belgium, Leopold I, 1831-65, copper two centimes of 1842. Minor stains, Uncirculated.)"
This type was struck 1833-65 in large quantities but most dates before 1845 are scarce in nice condition.
Recorded mintage: 2,824,000, a slightly better date.
