This specimen was lot 1443 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €1,800 (about US$2,279 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIQUE, Royaume, Léopold Ier (1831-1865), AR 2 francs, 1838. Pos. A. Lettres inclinées à d. Très rare. Beau. (kingdom of Belgium, Leopold I, silver two francs of 1838, position A, letters inclined to right. Very rare, good.)"

Position A refers to the orientation of the edge lettering when holding the coin king side up: position A is upright lettering, position B is upside down lettering. This type was struck 1834-35 and 1838-44 to the module of a French two francs. All the dates are scarce, especially in Very Fine or better.

Recorded mintage: 300,305.

Specification: 10 g, 0.900 fine silver, 27 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA BELGIQUE *.
