Bavaria 1869 thaler Dav-612
This specimen was lot 846 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $6,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "BAVARIA: Ludwig II, 1864-1886, AR vereinsthaler, 1869, a rare date, a superb proof quality example! PCGS graded Proof 65 DCAM, R, ex Almer Orr III Collection." This type was struck 1866-71 and the SCWC does not award this date much premium. King Ludwig II ruled until 1886, when he was deposed in favor of his brother. Disliked for his extravagance and his homosexuality, he died soon after under very mysterious circumstances.
