Bavaria 1871 thaler Dav-614
This specimen was lot 220 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €575 (about US$775 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Ludwig II. 1864-1886. Vereinstaler 1871. Stempel von J. Ries. R Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (kingdom of Bavaria, Louis II, 1864-86, union thaler of 1871, dies by J. Ries. Scarce, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
The vast majority of the 1871 regular issue thalers are Dav-612, featuring the bust by G. Voigt; this one by J. Ries is scarce, verging on rare. German unification and coinage reform in 1871-73 ended the issue of thalers.
Recorded mintage: 718,000 (including Dav-612 and -613).
Specification: 18.52 g, 0.900 fine silver, .535 troy oz ASW.
