Künker sale 293, lot 198

This specimen was lot 198 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €260 (about US$351 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Ludwig I. 1825-1848. Konv.-Taler 1835. Denkmal des Königs Maximilian Joseph. Variante mit verkürztem Zepter. Vorzüglich. (kingdom of Bavaria, Louis I, 1825-48, convention thaler of 1835, for the statue of king Maximilian Joseph. Extremely fine.)"

This rather scarce commemorative was issued for the unveiling of a statue of the king's father, Maximilian Joseph. It comes in two varieties on the reverse, with a short scepter or long scepter. The 1830's saw a gush of commemoratives--seven in 1835 alone--in Bavaria on significant and insignificant topics.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, .751 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: AKS 136 b; Kahnt 96 Anm.; Thun 69 Anm, Dav-577, KM 780.1 (long scepter) or KM 780.2 (short scepter, shown here).
