Bavaria 1827 thaler Dav-561
The first specimen was lot 2097 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 150 CHF (about US$189 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Bayern, Herzogtum, 1623 Kurfürstentum, 1806 Königreich, Ludwig I. 1825-1848 Konventionstaler 1827. München Stiftung des Theresien-Ordens. Fast vorzüglich. (kingdom of Bavaria, Louis I (1825-48) convention thaler of 1827, Munich mint. On the founding of the order of St. Theresia. Choice extremely fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 3617 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $734.38. The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY. Bavaria. Taler, 1827. NGC MS-64. Finest certified example. Commemorative of the founding of the Theresien Order. Attractive toning. Good luster and very crisp details. From the Rockaway Collection." The Theresien Order, founded by the queen of Bavaria, seems to have served as a ladies' auxiliary to the Ludwigs Order, established by the king the same year and commemorated by a thaler (Dav-560). The two thalers are equal in price.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 27.88 g.
