Bavaria 1768-A thaler Dav-1956
This specimen was lot 952 in Jean Elsen sale 114 (Brussels, September 2012) where it sold for €200 (about US$309 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, BAVIERE, Maximilien III Joseph (1745-1777), AR Taler (Arslani-Taler), 1768, Amberg. Droit: Lion debout à gauche, tête à droite, tenant une épée et l'écu couronné de Bavière. Revers: Dans une couronne: AD: NORMAM/ CONVENT/ 1768. Rare. Nettoyé. Petit coup sur la tranche. Taler frappé pour le commerce avec le Levant. Son nom populaire vient du turc arslan (le lion). Très Beau. (Germany, Bavaria, Maximilian III Joseph (1745-77) silver "Arslani" thaler of 1768, Amberg mint. Obverse: lion rears left, head to right, bearing a sword and the arms of Bavaria; reverse: legend AD: NORMAM/ CONVENT/ 1768 in a wreath. Rare, cleaned, small nick on the edge. This thaler was struck for commerce with the Levant where it acquired the name "Arslani" (lion) thaler. Very fine.)"
This type is listed for 1768 only and is rare. Other thalers (Dav-1949, Dav-1953, Dav-1954, Dav-1950, Dav-1951) exist for 1768.
