Bavaria 1738 thaler Dav-1942
This specimen was lot 3498 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €8,500 (about US$11,123 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BAYERN, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1623 KURFÜRSTENTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH: Karl Albert, 1726-1745. Taler 1738, München. C · A · D · G · V · B · & P · S · D · - C · P · R · S · R · I · A · & E · L · L · Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit umgelegtem Mantel, Ordensband und der Kette des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies//CLYPEUS OMNIBUS IN TE SPERANTIBUS · Madonna sitzt v. v. mit Zepter in der Linken, im rechten Arm hält sie das Kind, das die Rechte segnend erhebt und in der Linken einen Reichsapfel hält, im Vordergrund r. gekröntes, verziertes, bayerisches Wappen mit Mittelschild. Bavaria thalers for the first half of the eighteenth century, including this one, are scanty and rare. Not until the reign of Maxilian III Joseph do they appear in large numbers.
