Batthyani 1789 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 1511 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 700 CHF (about US$850 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA. Batthyani, Fürstentum, Ludwig, 1788-1806. 1/2 Konventionstaler 1789, Wien. Mit der Signatur I N WIRT (Johann Nepomuk Würth (Wirt, Wirth), Stempelschneider in Wien, seit 1778-1811). Vorzüglich-FDC. NGC MS62. Herrliche Patina. (Austria, principality of Batthyani, Louis, 1788-1806, half convention thaler of 1789, Vienna mint. Extremely fine-uncirculated, Most attractively toned.)"
This prince of Hungarian origin struck a thaler in 1788 (KM 8), this half thaler in 1789, a twenty kreuzer in 1790 (KM 12) and a ducat in 1791 (KM 13). All are rare.
