Sincona sale 87, lot 3033

This specimen was lot 3033 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 2,100 CHF (about US$2,828 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH, Batthyani, Fürstentum, Karl Josef, 1764-1772. 1/2 Konventionstaler 1764, Wien. Stempelschneider J. Toda. Fast FDC. Hübsche Patina. (principality of Batthyani, Charles Joseph, 1764-72, half convention thaler of 1764, Vienna mint. About uncirculated, Attractively toned.)"

"Count Károly József Batthyány of Németújvár (Hungarian: németújvári gróf Batthyány Károly József, Károly József Batthyány, German: Karl Josef Graf Batthyány, Croatian: Karlo Josip grof Baćan; 28 April 1697, Rohonc – 15 April 1772, Vienna) was a Hungarian general and field marshal. He served as ban (viceroy) of Croatia from 1743 to 1756."

He was one of several Austrian aristocrats granted the right to strike coins. In 1764, he struck a half thaler (shown here), a thaler (Dav-1182), a ducat (Fr-552), five ducats (Fr-551) and a ten ducats (Fr-550).
