Basel 1796 duplone Fr-71
This specimen was lot 4048 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 7,500 CHF (about US$10,879 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Basel, Stadt und Kanton, Duplone 1796, Basel. Ovales Wappen auf einer Kartusche. Unten die Jahreszahl. Rv. Vier Zeilen Schrift in einem Eichenkranz. Schräg gerippter Rand. Äusserst seltener Jahrgang. Vorzüglich. (Switzerland, canton of Basel, duplone of 1796, Basel mint. Obverese: Oval coat of arms in a cartouche, the date below. Reverse: Four lines of inscription within an oak wreath, Obliquely reeded edge. Extremely rare date, Extremely Fine.)"
This type was struck 1795-96 only and is rare. It is accompanied by a slightly more common duplone of 1795 (KM 187) with a different reverse. In 1798, the French occupied Switzerland and terminated cantonal independence.
