Aureo y Calicó sale 423, lot 1299

This specimen was lot 1299 in Aureo y Calicó sale 423 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 440 € (about US$570 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Pere III (1336-1387). Perpinya. Florin. Mark: Ringed rose. King's initial barely visible. MBC [very fine]." This florin was struck for Pedro III, count of Barcelona, who was also king Pedro IV of Aragon, Sardinia, Corsica, Valencia and later king of Mallorca and duke of Athens. He was born in 1319, crowned in 1337 and died in 1387. He was succeeded by Juan I (r. 1387-96), his son by his third wife. Spain would not be united for another century.
