The first specimen was lot 33838 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "Aragon. Pedro III gold Florin ND (1276-85) VF Details (Edge Filing) NGC. St. John the Baptist standing. This is an offering from Pedro el Grande, (The Great). Large lis on reverse." The second specimen was lot 1501 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €480 (about US$624 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"ESPAGNE, CATALOGNE ET ARAGON, Pierre III (IV en Aragon) (1336-1387), AV florin d'or au type florentin, Valence. Différent: tour. D/ ARAG-O REX· P Lis. R/ S· IOHA-NNES· B (tour) Saint Jean deb. de f. Très Beau. (Spain, Peter III of Aragon, 1336-87, gold florin, Valencia mint, tower mintmark. Obverse: fleur-de-lys; reverse: St. John the Baptist facing. Very Fine.)"

This imitation of a Florentine florin was struck in Perpignan for Pedro IV of Aragon, also Pedro III, count of Barcelona 1336-87. It is known with various privy marks: flower, head, crescent, cross, dagger, inverted triangle, "R" and a helmet (first specimen). It was also struck at Barcelona and Zaragoza. The fineness ranged 18 K-23.75 K. There was also quarter and half florins.

Specification: 3.43 g, .983 fine gold, .108 troy oz AGW.
