Aureo y Calicó sale 423, lot 1304

This specimen was lot 1304 in Aureo y Calicó sale 423 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 800 € (about US$1,036 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Martí I (1396-1410). Barcelona. Florin. Mark: checkered rhombus. Rare. MBC/MBC+ [very fine or better]." This florin was struck for Martin I, count of Barcelona, who was also king of Aragon, Valencia, Sardinia and Corsica and king of Sicily from 1409 (as Martin II). He failed to secure the accession of his illegitimate grandson, Frederic, Count of Luna, and with him the rule of the House of Barcelona came to an end. A similar florin was struck for Valencia.
