This specimen was lot 74603 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Barcelona. Dinero, ND (1276-85). James I. PCGS AU-50. Obverse: BARCINO, shield; Reverse: IACOBO REX, cross. Steely grey in color and well-struck, this simple design is significantly more elusive than the portrait type of this ruler." Jaime I was king of Aragon 1213-76 and later king of Valencia (from 1238), Mallorca (from 1229) and count of Barcelona. He signed a treaty with France wherein he renounced the Catalan claim to Languedoc and Provence in exchange for French recognition of his rule in Barcelona and Cerdanya. This dinero is attributed to him along with an obolo (Cayón-1833).
