This specimen was lot 1278 in Aureo y Calicó sale 423 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 1,200 € (about US$1,554 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "County of Empuries. Ponç Hug IV (1230-1269). Empuries. Diner. Attractive. Very rare like this. MBC+." The town of Ampurias in Catalonia, in Greek times known as Emporion, was abandoned in the ninth century as the result of Viking attacks. The county of Empúries, founded in Carolingian times, survived until the fourteenth century when it was merged with the crown of Aragon.
