Baden 1906 2 mark
This specimen was lot 70667 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Baden. 2 Mark, 1906. Karlsruhe Mint. Friedrich I. NGC MS-63. Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the wedding of Duke Friedrich I and Louise. Rather impressive Choice quality is evident, with smooth, satiny surfaces largely uninterrupted by nicks or signs of handling." This commemorative was issued in large numbers--the duke must have been popular--and is common today. It accompanied a silver five mark. The two mark superseded the gulden from before unification.
Recorded mintage: 350,000.
Specification: 27.77 g, 0.900 fine, 38 mm diameter, lettered edge.
