Stack's Bowers 2026 ANA sale, lot 42290
SB826-42290r.jpg

This specimen was lot 42290 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, September 2026), where it sold for $4,636. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Baden. Taler, 1868. Karlsruhe Mint. Friedrich I. NGC MS-65. Despite merely receiving a Mint State surface designation, it is fairly clear that this crown presents superior eye appeal and craftsmanship than is generally encountered for the type, making it an undoubted cut above. Richly toned and alluring degree of iridescence, it should be highly coveted and intensely pursued. From the Charles “Cheech” Litman Collection." This type was issued 1865-71 in some numbers but is today scarce in nice condition. It is the last thaler issued prior to unification. The prior type (KM 240) had the duke facing right and without a beard.

Recorded mintage: 101,970, a common date.

Specification: 18.15 g, 0.900 fine silver, 33 mm diameter, edge lettered "MUNZVERTRAG VOM 24 JANUAR 1857".

Catalog reference: Dav-531; KM-245.
